Connecting a GOPRO 3 to aircraft radio
Posted by Mark Kirschenbaum on
I was looking for this but could not find it online so here it is: If you want to connect a GOPRO HERO3 to an aircraft radio all you need to do is buy a GOPRO microphone adapter or a
GOPRO combo cable and jack the speaker out of your radio to the microphone-in on the aforesaid cable. For instance I created a cable for our VXA-150 by using a 3.5mm 4 conductor cable and a 3.5mm 3 conductor cable like below:
4 Conductor | 3 Conductor / 2 Conductor mono |
Shield (closest to cable) | Shield / Tip |
Tip (furthest away from cable) | Tip and ring / Tip |
Ring | NC |
Sleeve | NC |
The GOPRO automatically sets the appropriate level and the video sounds fine. I would set the gain of the radio to about half to ¾ of the way up.
I like testing this setup with the combo cable with a little display but you can always just record a bit and hook it up to your computer to confirm. To connect to your headset, use a 1/4" Mono Y cable before going into the cable you are building. All situations are different, but the big thing to remember is no decoupling or gain control needs to be added before going into the GOPRO microphone input.
